The Three Roots: Lama, Yidam, Khadro

In Tibetan la means that which is “highest and most precious”; ma means “mother.” Just as a mother expresses love and compassion for her children, so the lama shows unsurpassed love and compassion for sentient beings. The lama remains inseparable from the Buddha, but for Vajrayana practitioners, the lama's kindness is even greater and more direct than the Buddha's because the lama has taken rebirth to teach and guide them. The lama embodies the source of all blessing through empowerments, teachings, and lineage transmission, including the mind-to-mind transmission of Great Perfection.

Yidam means the bond established through pure Vajrayana commitment (Skt. samaya; Tib. damtsig). The yidam is the chosen meditational deity, the deity with whom the practitioner has an abiding bond. Accomplishing the deity's meditation brings forth in the practitioner the qualities of the deity. These qualities, inseparable from mind's absolute nature, have always been the practitioner's own qualities, but like gold in unrefined ore they remain hidden. Meditating on the yidam refines away obscurations. The yidam serves as the source of all siddhis, the extraordinary spiritual accomplishments that benefit others.

Khadro is the Tibetan term for the Sanskrit dakini; kha means “sky” or “space” in the sense of dharmadhatu, and dro means “goer.” The khadro goes without obstruction through space, fulfilling the lama's enlightened activity. Embodying the female principle of pristine awareness (yeshey), dakinis manifest at various levels, including that of humans; the great practitioners Yeshe Tsogyal and Machig Labdron, for example, were dakinis.
